A Makeover for Harry Winston Classics

La Cote des Montres - February 20th, 2007

Today, Harry Winston’s iconic timepiece collections, the Premier and the Avenue, enter their second generation with innovative 21st-century designs.

In 1989, Harry Winston raised the bar for what defined the ultimate in timepieces when it introduced two collections — the Premier for men and the Avenue for women.

The Premier forged a new path for the Manhattan jeweller through its strong masculine identity and its incorporation of the stylized three arches of its 5th Avenue showrooms. The Premier was totally innovative- unlike any other contemporary Haute Horlogerie timepiece. It introduced a novel way of telling time — the retrograde indicator. The Excenter dial challenged watch-making conventions.

The Avenue evoked the dazzling city lights and enchantment of Manhattan. Wearing an Avenue, a woman could feel as though she was a star on Oscar night. The design motif spelled “Harry Winston” in diamonds. The Avenue quickly became Harry Winston’s best-selling timepiece.

These two timepieces captured the mood and aspirations of the fast-paced nineties — their elegance reflecting a certain nostalgia for the Jazz Age. Since their inception, a new era has commenced. Time has become more precious than ever before, and the ways of telling time even more complex and refined.

The new generation of the Harry Winston Premier and Avenue collections is designed to enhance one’s relationship with time and its profound emotional dimensions.

Excenter Perpetual Calendar

The renaissance of Harry Winston’s first watch

The Excenter Perpetual Calendar, the first timepiece created by Harry Winston, has undergone its first design makeover since its introduction in 1989.

The new Excenter Perpetual Calendar, scheduled to be unveiled at Baselworld 2007, retains all of the elements that, for the past 18 years, have garnered Harry Winston timepieces the same level of acclaim as that of its jewelry.

The iconic three-arch Harry Winston watch-case, crafted in white gold, is sleeker and slightly larger at 41mm, and the trademark Excenter dial is more streamlined and clear. The face presents the moon phases and leap-year cycle as planets eclipsing the chapters of the hours and months.

In appearance, the new Excenter has the sleek, functional and ultra-modern attributes that characterize the latest concepts in supercars.

The movement, which is based on the reliable GP automatic calibre, has been upgraded with new retrograde mechanisms to operate the date and month functions. The moon, floating in its constellation of stars, has been designed to wax and wane in a circular aperture. The second time zone is set by the crown and indicated by a coloured hand. No special stylus is required to set the date and month; one need only unscrew the button located at the 8 o’clock position and press down.

The lightly engine-turned anthracite or silvered dial creates a moiré or watered-silk effect and a contrast with the chapter rings in order to ensure that the indicators are absolutely clear.

The original Excenter Perpetual Calendar with its innovative design, was the pioneering timepiece that established Harry Winston’s identity as a master watchmaker. It was also one of the first timepieces to introduce and popularise retrograde indicators.

The New Avenue, one of Harry Winston’s first timepieces designed for women, has experienced a renaissance. The new Avenue oval dial has an even more precise and intricate design than did its 1989 predecessor. Through the juxtaposition of curved and squared geometric elements, its elegant symmetry evokes a more profound range of feminine sensibilities. An understated leather band complements the new Avenue’s high style.

The New Avenue retains its Art-Deco identity through its familiar rectangular case. Yet, its austerity is softened by a glistening oval motif of pavé diamonds set into a traditional mother-of-pearl face. Time is indicated with boldly applied hour-markers. The jewel set into the crown is an inverted brilliant-cut diamond.

Harry Winston’s best-selling timepiece collection for women has turned 18 and is making its second début with even grander diamonds and fresh look.

With 20 major VVS diamonds — having a total weight of more than four and one-half carats — the New Avenue subtly reflects a new dimension in the value of a woman’s time.
