The Luminor 1950 Flyback becomes even more exclusive with the Regatta edition, strictly limited to 500 units
La Cote des Montres - May 25th, 2006

Officine Panerai is continuing its traditional association with the world of sailing, now playing an ever more important role in a competition in which the most beautiful period yachts line themselves up in the most celebrated Mediterranean locations.

As usual, Panerai is celebrating this important event by producing an appropriate Special Edition: the Luminor 1950 Flyback Regatta.

Compared to the Luminor 1950 Flyback in the catalogue, this edition has a dial with Clous de Paris decoration, with its subsidiary dials in relief enhancing the central part of the dial itself. The chronograph counters have a smooth finish and they are sunk slightly below the level of the main dial, balancing the outer flange with its tachymeter scale for measuring speed. The black background provides perfect legibility for the luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers, as well as the baton hour and minute hands and the hands of the chronograph minute counter and continuous seconds dial, which are located at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock respectively.

On the dial the names Luminor and Panerai are accompanied by the word “Regatta” in cursive script, an inscription unique to this model, and “Flyback”. The latter is a term which refers to a special technical function of the Panerai calibre OP XIX, an automatic movement with a column wheel system controlling the chronograph functions. This is the flyback function, also known as the “retour en vol” or Taylor function. It is very simple to operate. While the chronograph is running, pressing the zeroing button (located at 4 o’clock, while the push-piece at 2 o’clock carries out the start and stop functions) immediately returns the large blued centre hand to zero, without having to stop it first; the hand instantly starts again when the button is released.

The steel case of the Panerai Luminor 1950 Flyback Regatta, with push-pieces integrated into the device protecting the winding crown and screw-in back, displays the constructional quality that is characteristic of Officine Panerai’s creations, with water-resistance guaranteed to a depth of 100 metres.
