Jaws, made from the original mould, and items evoking directors from Alfred Hitchcock to Bruce Lee.
On the museum’s third floor, the modular exhibitions inside the Rolex Gallery are designed as singular journeys through different moments in film history. Visitors are plunged into the work and world of directors from around the globe. Installations in the
Stories of Cinema core exhibition reveal the many aspects of moviemaking – animation techniques, special effects, artists, history and social impact – through diverse voices that convey the magic of the big screen. The space also features an immersive multimedia installation specially created for the museum by legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
In Inventing Worlds and Characters, visitors learn how artists and technicians develop elements that go into creating a film, from the initial idea to the final production. Models, costumes and animation celluloids are among the many objects on display.

Rolex, host
of the Oscars® Greenroom
Rolex has always maintained close ties with the world of cinema. Its watches have played their own role on the wrists of legendary characters in numerous films, including multiple Oscar-winning masterpieces. And today, by its support of artistic and technical excellence in filmmaking, Rolex itself has become an active participant in its own right.
Rolex encourages the preservation and transmission of the cinematic arts, promotes excellence and celebrates progress by accompanying living legends as well as young talents through its Testimonees (Martin Scorsese and James Cameron), its partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the institution, the awards and the Academy Museum in Los Angeles) and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
ROLEX AND CINEMA: A MOVEMENT PERPETUALLY REINVENTED Cinema is a perpetual movement. It has the power to bring history to life and to explore every possible future, both collective and individual. Like a Rolex watch, cinema is ingrained with our memories and aspirations. It is witness to our ambitions and to our determination to overcome any obstacle we may find along our way. More than simply 24 frames per second, or 24 hours within a day, it embodies the very essence of our emotions.
ROLEX AND CINEMA, WRITING HISTORY SIDE BY SIDE In 1926, the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, invented a revolutionary waterproof wristwatch that made headlines, the Oyster. Just months later, audiences marvelled at The Jazz Singer, the first ever talkie. These two moments in time signalled the arrival of both modern filmmaking and modern watchmaking.
In 1931, Rolex introduced another visionary breakthrough in the Oyster Perpetual: the first waterproof, automatic-winding wristwatch, equipped with a Perpetual rotor. Meanwhile, cinema saw colour make its big-screen debut.
From then on, Rolex and cinema would always resonate with the times. To this day, they continue to share a quest for excellence, innovation and progress, which encourages the greatest aspirations.
ROLEX ON AND OFF THE SCREEN Decade after decade, a growing cast of celebrities would wear a Rolex onscreen.
As their watch of choice, the greatest actors and directors would, in turn, reflect on the watch and bestow it with their own charisma and flair. But after being a guest star on their wrist, both in front and behind the camera, Rolex would soon take on a starring role.
ROLEX AND HOLLYWOOD En 2017, deux événements majeurs vont consacrer la longue In 2017 two major events would cement the longstanding association between Rolex and the film industry. Firstly, director Martin Scorsese joined James Cameron as a Rolex Testimonee. And the same year, the brand sealed its partnership with the film industry’s highest authority, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Rolex became the Exclusive Watch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Proud Sponsor of the Oscars
® and Exclusive Sponsor of the Governors Awards. Rolex is also a Founding Supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures which opened in Los Angeles in September 2021.

A cameo is the term used in the film industry to describe the fleeting appearance of a famous personality in a film.
For nearly a century, Rolex has been making cameo appearances on the wrists of legendary Hollywood actors.
A WATCH, A CHARACTER Rolex watches enrich the identity of the characters who wear them with their powerful symbolism. That they should appear in so many films is no coincidence. When a character wears a Rolex watch, this is an artistic choice made by the actors and directors. Thanks to these watches and their screen presence, Rolex is indissociable from the world of film.
A ROLEX IS A STORY IN ITSELF When an actor chooses to wear a Rolex watch, its presence on their wrist adds information to the plot. The personal effect lends the character a possible history, past and destiny. It reveals something of the temperament, taste, values, aspirations and mindset of the person who wears it.

Highlight of the film season
The Oscars
® ceremony is a unique celebration of the excellence, inspiration and technical genius from which masterpieces are made. Since 2017, Rolex has been the Proud Sponsor of the Oscars
® ceremony, held at the Dolby
® Theatre in Hollywood. Telecast live in more than 200 territories worldwide, this unique event does more than celebrate cinema: year after year it helps shape the landscape of cinema worldwide.
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE The Oscars
® ceremony represents infinitely more than a recognition by one’s peers. It celebrates inspiration and emotion as well as the production process, the technical expertise and all else that goes into the making of a film. To borrow a favourite expression of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, it is an ode to
“a work done handsomely”. Cinema is at once an art, a science and an industry, and the Oscars
® ceremony shines a light on every one of its facets.
ROLEX AND THE OSCARS® GREENROOM Rolex is the official host of the Greenroom, the antechamber of the Oscars
®. Nominees and presenters gather inside this lounge before and after stepping onto the stage at the Oscars
® ceremony, some returning with a coveted statuette.
Each year, Rolex develops a unique immersive experience and a new decor for the Greenroom. In 2023, the Greenroom captures the ambience of a tropical forest. More than a celebration of nature, Rolex is paying homage to explorers and scientists who take action on the ground, day after day, to protect the planet. A way to poetically express its commitment to the preservation of our ecosystems as part of its Perpetual Planet Initiative.
For almost a century, Rolex has accompanied those who explore our world, seek to understand its environmental challenges and put forward solutions to overcome them. Launched in 2019, the Perpetual Planet Initiative reflects this approach and is built on three founding pillars: two long-standing partners, Mission Blue and the National Geographic Society, and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise. Since then, the Initiative has continued to grow and today includes more than 20 partners.

Exceptional filmmakers
James Cameron
& Martin Scorsese
Exploring film,
filming exploration
“Imagination is a force that can actually manifest a reality. don’t put limitations on yourself. others will do that for you.” James Cameron
The work of James Cameron is part dream, part adventure and demonstrates his passion for innovation. Though a multiple Oscar-winning director, he has never put aside his other passion: exploration. Cameron’s two facets are woven together in each of his exploits and each of his films.
An exacting storyteller with a deeply technical bent, he has proven the ability to captivate any audience. Masterful even in the most ambitious productions, Cameron knows how to cope with pressure and always succeeds in putting his inspiration first. In this way, he perfects his vision, expands his knowledge and enriches his art.
Twenty-three years after
The Abyss, he descended alone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench – at a depth of 10,908 metres (35,787 feet) – inside the
DEEPSEA CHALLENGER a submersible of his own design.
With
Titanic, in 1997, he transformed our collective image of a rusting ship carcass on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean into that of a newly launched behemoth cutting through the waves off Southampton. Four years later, he dived 3,800 metres (12,500 feet) to the wreck site of the original
Titanic, to film a documentary,
Ghosts of the Abyss. From remarkable dives to 3D reconstructions, Cameron endlessly pushes the boundaries of human, technical and artistic achievement. He works tirelessly to find solutions to the most complex challenges with the aim of reinventing the art of filmmaking. Audiences have welcomed
Titanic, Avatar and
Terminator as monuments in film history, whose legacy far outweighs mere box-office success.
With
Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to
Avatar, Cameron has set a new artistic and technical benchmark and brought renewed proof of the director’s perpetual quest for excellence.
A towering figure of cinema
“Movies are the memories of our lifetime,
we need to keep them alive.””Martin Scorsese
The films of Martin Scorsese have conquered audiences worldwide. His 26 feature films have won multiple awards. This legendary director has systematically followed his own path and transformed his chosen medium.
One of the defining elements of Scorsese’s work is the remarkable attention he pays to each stage of production, whether working alongside screenwriters to craft deeply nuanced characters, choosing the score that will lend each scene its particular colour, or recreating the mood of a given era. His fluency in the language of film combines with his capacity to create an atmosphere on-set that gives actors the confidence to improvise.
This eclectic and humanist director has explored every genre, from period movies to thrillers, from Noir to musicals and psychological dramas. His work has given us characters who have made filmmaking history. Steeped in the legacy of the greatest classics and driven by a perpetual quest for modernity, the films of Scorsese offer a unique vision while sensitively exploring the human condition.
Whether feature films, documentaries, series or shorts, as a director or as a producer, decade after decade Scorsese has built a vast filmography. He is behind The Film Foundation dedicated to the preservation and restoration of world cinema, an endeavour that has the support of Rolex. He pays tribute to filmmaking’s acclaimed auteurs while maintaining a creative dialogue with younger generations through artistic collaborations and through his involvement with the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
Hardworking and passionate, equally admirative of a classic movie as of a debut film, he humbly serves a cause which he considers to be greater than his own contribution: that of cinema in its entirety.
The Rolex Mentor
and Protégé Art Initiative
Passing on the filmmaker’s art
“Every scene is a lesson.
Every shot is a school.
Let the learning continue.”Martin Scorsese
Rolex strongly believes that it is essential for excellence to be passed on, from one generation to the next. So as to ensure the perpetuity of crafts and expertise, the brand has established a programme of artistic mentoring, in which promising young artists can benefit from the guidance and experience of great artists in their field. Over the span of two years, with Rolex’s support, they develop a creative collaboration that often outlasts the duration of the programme.
Since 2002, nine of the 63 mentor and protégé duos have been in film. Each protégé is a young talent whose work has been scouted widely, including at festivals or from the Oscars
® shortlist. The mentors are all filmmaking greats and include Mira Nair, Stephen Frears, Martin Scorsese, Walter Murch, Zhang Yimou, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Spike Lee and Jia Zhang-Ke.
Keeping
film legacy alive
PRESERVING MOTION PICTURE HISTORY: THE FILM FOUNDATION Rolex supports The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 1990 by Martin Scorsese that is dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history.
Conscious of the need to preserve this fragile legacy, Scorsese was joined by seven prominent filmmakers. They are Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg. A few years later, Robert Altman and Clint Eastwood also came onboard.
Working in partnership with archives institutions and studios, the foundation has helped to restore over 925 films. They are made accessible to the public through programming at festivals, museums and educational institutions around the world. Its World Cinema Project celebrates the rich diversity of world cinema and has restored 50 films from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Central America, South America and the Middle East. In addition, The Film Foundation’s free educational curriculum, The Story of Movies, teaches young people about film language and history.
An unrivalled reputation for quality and expertise
Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch
manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization.
The word
“Perpetual” is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet. Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts and culture, sport and exploration, as well as those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet.
