Vacheron Constantin announces an exceptional collaboration with a Legendary photographer, Steve McCurry, in order to illustrate the Overseas collection. The Manufacture offers a distinctive perspective on the world through the lens of this great master of images. Like the 12 hours of the dial, the photojournalist will immortalise 12 unexpected locations, like so many unique moments captured in eternity.

Its archives contain historical records named “Rencontre” in which sales that took place abroad were kept. Its fame has thus been shaped through these encounters taking place in increasingly remote locations over more than 260 years of history and uninterrupted expertise.

Reflecting the essence of modern Fine Watchmaking dedicated to comfort, the new Overseas models are the ideal companions of modern travellers who are steadily enriched by every successive encounter and every fresh discovery. To highlight this perspective of the world shaped by travel, Vacheron Constantin has selected a legendary photographer, who places the notion of humanity at the very heart of his work: Steve McCurry. Behind this partnership lies the notion of eternity, the common denominator between the photographer and the Manufacture, as much with regard to the representation of the world as to the expression of time.

While Steve McCurry first and foremost dreamt of becoming a filmmaker, he ended up enrolling at the College of Arts and Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Following his studies, he undertook a tour of Europe, and subsequently visited South America and Africa. In order to reconcile his profession with his love of travelling, Steve McCurry decided to become a photojournalist. His philosophy of work took shape, focused on observing life... and waiting. He explains that by doing so, “people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.” He began covering international and civil conflicts, winning the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award in recognition of his courage and resourceful spirit. Rewarded and acclaimed all over the world, his work is guided by a sense of wonderment with regard to the planet and the people he meets. His relationship to human beings is unique, as is his relationship with time. He has indeed made the latter his greatest ally, as someone constantly seeking out “the unexpected, the moment of serendipity, thus enabling accidental discoveries of interesting things one was not looking for.” His curiosity, his ability to surpass the boundaries of language and culture so as to capture their meaning and their humanity, make him the finest interpreter of the spirit of travel according to Vacheron Constantin and the Overseas Collection.


Vacheron Constantin and Steve McCurry sought to scour the world to embody the Overseas collection: 12 locations, 12 rare, little-known and sometimes inaccessible sites captured by the photographer’s lens, chime with the fundamental values of the Maison. Above and beyond their beauty, the shots reflect the spirit that has been driving Vacheron Constantin for 260 years. Rigorous discipline, patience, creativity, movement, transmission and openness to the world are just some of the cornerstones that place both the Manufacture and Steve McCurry’s journey within the perspective of eternity. This odyssey will begin in Geneva in February 2016 and will continue across the world for an entire year.

Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic figures in contemporary photography for more than thirty years. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McCurry studied cinematography at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a newspaper. After two years, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India. Traveling with little more than a bag of clothes and film, he made his way across the subcontinent, exploring the country with his camera.

It was after several months of travel that he crossed the border into Pakistan. In a small village he met a group of refugees from Afghanistan, who smuggled him across the border into their country, just as the Russian invasion was closing the country to Western journalists. Emerging in traditional dress, with full beard and weather-worn features after months embedded with the Mujahideen, McCurry made his way over the Pakistan border with his film sewn into his clothes. McCurry’s images were among the first to show the world the brutality of the Russian invasion.

Since then, McCurry has gone on to create unforgettable images over six continents and numerous countries. His body of work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture alike - yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl such a powerful image.

McCurry has been recognized with some of the most prestigious awards including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest amongst dozens of others.
