Rolex is the official host of the Greenroom, the antechamber of the Oscars®. Nominees and presenters gather inside this lounge before and after stepping onto the stage at the Oscars® ceremony, some returning with a coveted statuette.

 
Each year, Rolex develops a unique immersive experience and a new decor for the Greenroom. In 2023, the Greenroom captures the ambience of a tropical forest. More than a celebration of nature, Rolex is paying homage to explorers and scientists who take action on the ground, day after day, to protect the planet. A way to poetically express its commitment to the preservation of our ecosystems as part of its Perpetual Planet Initiative.

 
For almost a century, Rolex has accompanied those who explore our world, seek to understand its environmental challenges and put forward solutions to overcome them. Inaugurated in September 2021 in the world’s film capital, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures this year celebrates its two-year anniversary.


A must-see institution for all passionate about film, it is the largest museum dedicated to filmmaking in the United States. Located on Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile, the museum is immediately recognizable by its glass dome, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano who also fully renovated the 28,000-square metre building. Inside are over 4,500 square metres of gallery space for temporary and permanent exhibitions, two film theatres including the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater, an educational studio along with areas for public events and ceremonies.

Among the hundreds of objects on display are the sole surviving shark from the filming of Jaws, made from the original mould, and items evoking directors from Alfred Hitchcock to Bruce Lee.

On the museum’s third floor, the modular exhibitions inside the Rolex Gallery are designed as singular journeys through different moments in film history. Visitors are plunged into the work and world of directors from around the globe. Installations in the Stories of Cinema core exhibition reveal the many aspects of moviemaking – animation techniques, special effects, artists, history and social impact – through diverse voices that convey the magic of the big screen. The space also features an immersive multimedia installation specially created for the museum by legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.

In Inventing Worlds and Characters, visitors learn how artists and technicians develop elements that go into creating a film, from the initial idea to the final production. Models, costumes and animation celluloids are among the many objects on display.

In 2023, the design of the Greenroom shines the spotlight on the colour green. More than a mere tribute to the chromatic identity of the brand, it is a celebration of our natural world. It is a way for Rolex to poetically express its commitment to the preservation of our ecosystems as part of its Perpetual Planet Initiative.

 
Designed according to a palette of neutral tones and shades reminiscent of plants, the Greenroom presents itself as a peaceful space, a garden where guests can truly relax. Drawing inspiration from the heart of the rainforest, it is adorned with woven materials. Its walls, upholstered in natural tones, form a cocoon, punctuated by ornamental objects in the shapes and colours of tropical vegetation. A ceiling of exotic leaves evokes a lush canopy, while a curtain of carved bamboo creates a welcoming alcove. Bespoke furniture with smooth, round contours completes the elegant picture.

 
Together, all the elements of the decor play a role in delineating the room organically. By inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the world of a rainforest, Rolex pays tribute to the explorers and scientists taking action on the ground, day after day, to protect the planet.

ROLEX AND CINEMA: A MOVEMENT PERPETUALLY REINVENTED
Cinema is a perpetual movement. It has the power to bring history to life and to explore every possible future, both collective and individual. Like a Rolex watch, cinema is ingrained with our memories and aspirations. It is witness to our ambitions and to our determination to overcome any obstacle we may find along our way. More than simply 24 frames per second, or 24 hours within a day, it embodies the very essence of our emotions.

In 1926, the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, invented a revolutionary waterproof wristwatch that made headlines, the Oyster. Just months later, audiences marvelled at The Jazz Singer, the first ever talkie. These two moments in time signalled the arrival of both modern filmmaking and modern watchmaking.

In 1931, Rolex introduced another visionary breakthrough in the Oyster Perpetual: the first waterproof, automatic-winding wristwatch, equipped with a Perpetual rotor. Meanwhile, cinema saw colour make its big-screen debut.

A celebration of long-standing contributions to film  
 

The Governors Awards mark the beginning of the Oscars® season. They honour the great names of cinema and are presented in recognition of a lifetime of remarkable achievements.

As such, the awards capture the spirit of the partnership between Rolex and cinema by rewarding individuals with long careers, who have showed constant dedication to their artistic visions and have enduring bodies of work. They celebrate outstanding humanitarian efforts and recognize contributions to the art of filmmaking.

There are three Governors Awards.

THE JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD
This award is presented to a personality within the film industry who has set an example through their work in support of a humanitarian cause. The 2022 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award went to American actor Michael J. Fox for his tireless commitment to the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

Previous winners include Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman, Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie and Geena Davis.

HONORARY AWARDS
In recognition of their entire body of work, the 2022 Honorary Awards went to director Peter Weir,composer Diane Warren and director Euzhan Palcy.

The Honorary Awards recognize a talent, an outstanding career, or an exceptional contribution to motion picture arts and sciences. The 2022 winners join such illustrious predecessors as Charlie Chaplin, Spike Lee, Jean-Luc Godard, Lauren Bacall, Agnès Varda, Ennio Morricone, Federico Fellini, Kirk Douglas, Sidney Poitier, Stanley Donen, Sophia Loren, Lalo Schifrin, Liv Ullmann, Elaine May and Samuel L. Jackson.

THE IRVING G. THALBERG MEMORIAL AWARD
The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award is periodically presented to “creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production”.

Previous winners include Darryl F. Zanuck, David O. Selznick, Walt Disney, Cecil B. DeMille, Sam Spiegel, Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, Albert R. Broccoli, Steven Spielberg, Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola and Clint Eastwood. In 2019, Kathleen Kennedy became the first woman to receive the award, jointly with her husband, Frank Marshall.

Twenty-three years after The Abyss, he descended alone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench – at a depth of 10,908 metres (35,787 feet) – inside the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER a submersible of his own design.

With Titanic, in 1997, he transformed our collective image of a rusting ship carcass on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean into that of a newly launched behemoth cutting through the waves off Southampton. Four years later, he dived 3,800 metres (12,500 feet) to the wreck site of the original Titanic, to film a documentary, Ghosts of the Abyss.

From remarkable dives to 3D reconstructions, Cameron endlessly pushes the boundaries of human, technical and artistic achievement. His work has given us characters who have made filmmaking history. Rolex strongly believes that it is essential for excellence to be passed on, from one generation to the next. So as to ensure the perpetuity of crafts and expertise, the brand has established a programme of artistic mentoring, in which promising young artists can benefit from the guidance and experience of great artists in their field. Over the span of two years, with Rolex’s support, they develop a creative collaboration that often outlasts the duration of the programme.


Since 2002, nine of the 63 mentor and protégé duos have been in film. Each protégé is a young talent whose work has been scouted widely, including at festivals or from the Oscars® shortlist. The mentors are all filmmaking greats and include Mira Nair, Stephen Frears, Martin Scorsese, Walter Murch, Zhang Yimou, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Spike Lee and Jia Zhang-Ke.

PRESERVING MOTION PICTURE HISTORY: THE FILM FOUNDATION
Rolex supports The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 1990 by Martin Scorsese that is dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history.

Conscious of the need to preserve this fragile legacy, Scorsese was joined by seven prominent filmmakers. They are Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg. A few years later, Robert Altman and Clint Eastwood also came onboard.

Working in partnership with archives institutions and studios, the foundation has helped to restore over 925 films. They are made accessible to the public through programming at festivals, museums and educational institutions around the world. Its World Cinema Project celebrates the rich diversity of world cinema and has restored 50 films from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Central America, South America and the Middle East. In addition, The Film Foundation’s free educational curriculum, The Story of Movies, teaches young people about film language and history.

The movements of its watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization.

The word “Perpetual” is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents.
